The Odesa court revoked the license of Ukrainian Tobacco Production LLC, which is one of the largest producers of illegal cigarettes in Ukraine.
According to the Bureau of Economic Security (BEB), the company, under the guise of legal production, organized the illegal manufacture of cigarettes using fake excise stamps and smuggled them to the EU.
In 2023-2024, the company’s products, which included both its own brands and counterfeit brands, were sold on the domestic market of Ukraine. LLC Ukrainian Tobacco Production occupied 16% of the illegal tobacco market in Ukraine, second only to other large illegal producers.
It was noted that the Bureau of Economic Security and other law enforcement agencies conducted large-scale searches at the factories of four suspected manufacturers of illegal cigarettes in May 2024, which received support from business associations and G7 ambassadors.
According to Kantar Ukraine research, the share of the shadow tobacco market decreased from 25.7% at the end of 2023 to 14.6% in July 2024, which indicates success in the fight against the illegal market.
Earlier it was reported that intermediaries in Ukraine resold barbed wire for fortifications, which are manufactured in the institutions of the State Criminal Enforcement Service. Because of this, the budget has already lost about UAH 300 million.
And the SBU, together with the prosecutor’s office, eliminated a corruption scheme in the Territorial Administration of the Security Service of Ukraine in Zakarpattia Oblast. There they organized the “crushing” of the illegal business of entrepreneurs selling excise goods.
