US President Joe Biden authorized the provision of anti-personnel mines to Ukraine, reports The Washington Post with reference to two US officials.

It is noted that the Biden administration is concerned about the intensification of Russian offensive actions on the front in Ukraine in recent weeks and considers it necessary to stop this advance. According to the Pentagon, providing mines is one of the most effective steps to slow the Russian offensive.

One official explained that antipersonnel mines are “fragile” — they self-destruct or defuse after days or weeks, reducing the risk to civilians. He also noted that the Ukrainian authorities undertook not to use these mines in densely populated areas.

As WP writes, Biden was in no hurry to provide mines to Ukraine because of the risks to civilians, but the successes of Russia and the victory of Donald Trump in the US elections forced the White House to look for new ways to support Kyiv.

According to one of the officials, the use of new mines will be limited to Ukrainian territory, with an expected focus on eastern Ukraine.
