“This may become a political necessity. And this is something that will never win you any political points, because now the authorities will have to reduce the categories of exemptions from mobilization. Now there are many exceptions: number of children, work in critical infrastructure, age. All this can be changed,” said Kopechny in an interview with Radio Svoboda.
He also noted that he does not make any appeals to the Ukrainian authorities or the Ukrainian people, as he is a representative of a foreign government, and expresses his analytical thoughts on how mobilization could be strengthened against the background of a significant shortage of people in the Ukrainian army.
“There is no good idea that is not politically sensitive. It is not about a technical solution. This is actually a political decision that will hurt. And these decisions, these state decisions must be made. But you know, although I am quite frank, I am still a representative of a foreign government, and it is not my job to tell the Ukrainian people and the Ukrainian authorities what to do about this,” he added.
In early November, the American edition of the New York Times reported that, according to the United States, Ukraine will have enough soldiers for another 6-12 months, after which it will probably have to face a catastrophic shortage of personnel.
On November 18, the Ministry of Defense announced that it had prepared proposals on how to reform approaches to mobilization, which the Cabinet of Ministers will propose for discussion. In particular, we are talking about the refusal of forced mobilization of men, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Rustem Umyerov said during a press conference in Kyiv.
Answering the question about whether digitalization will reduce the number of facts of “busification” on the streets, the minister said that they plan to move away from “painful issues for the population.”
He also added that they will work for Ukrainians abroad so that “they too have the choice to join the army.”
