The Center Air Command of the Ukrainian Air Force published a photo of an F-16 pilot, drawing attention to one of the most technologically interesting elements of the crew. The picture shows the upgraded HGU-55/P helmet equipped with the JHMCS (Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System).
Military columnist Ihal Levin writes about this. He points out that the JHMCS system provides pilots with unique capabilities: with its help, it is possible to “target” infrared missiles with a glance, as well as see targets detected by radar or received through the Datalink data exchange system without the need to use a windshield indicator (ILS).
For comparison, a similar system exists on Soviet-made Ukrainian fighters (MiG-29 and Su-27), but it is significantly inferior to JHMCS.
The Soviet system is less reliable, limited in functionality and used only to guide infrared missiles and work with the electronic-optical complex of the aircraft. Due to its shortcomings and fragility, it is rarely used in real missions, while the JHMCS on Western aircraft is actively used.
We will remind you that the first F-16 fighters from the Netherlands with 24 ships have already arrived in Ukraine, the rest will be delivered by the end of the year.
By the end of 2024, Ukraine will receive another batch of F-16 fighters from Denmark. The date and number of aircraft in the new deliveries are currently not disclosed for reasons of operational security.
