India’s antitrust agency ordered WhatsApp not to share user data for advertising purposes with other Meta apps for five years and fined the company $25.4 million for violating antitrust laws.

About this informs Reuters.

WhatsApp is said to have violated India’s antitrust laws over the messaging app’s 2021 privacy policy

In March 2021, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) launched an investigation into WhatsApp’s privacy policy that allowed data sharing with Facebook and its divisions, sparking a global backlash.

The Indian government is currently studying the February report of a panel of experts set up by the ministry of corporate relations. The report proposes a new “Digital Competition Bill” that will complement existing antitrust laws.

Tech giants including Apple, Google and Meta are facing new regulatory challenges over India’s proposed European-style antitrust laws.

The US-India Business Council, a key US lobbying group, has already opposed the move, fearing its impact on business.

We will remind:

European Commission fined company Meta Platforms for 797.72 million euros ($840.24 million) for abuse in favor of Facebook Marketplace.
