The fact that we conceded so minimally to Ukraine is actually a super performance by all our players. We proved once again that we have a very good team and have the potential to beat much stronger national teams. This gives me confidence that we can do it next year as well – even if the Euro-Africa group will be very difficult.”
Jurgen Meltzer (sports director of the Austrian Tennis Federation and captain of the men’s national team): “We fought well, we gave all our strength on Saturday and Sunday, but in the end, five incredible minutes from Zavacka in the doubles match decided everything against us. From 2:3 to 3:5 in the deciding set, there was little in our favor. A very close match and a very bitter ending. Of course, everyone is disappointed now.”
Tamira Pashek: “Of course, it hurt a lot, there were a lot of tears. It’s a pity! We really played a very good game, but unfortunately luck was not on our side. “Everything was decided by just a few draws. Nevertheless, we are very proud. We are a great team, we gave our all, we tried to stay together – and Signa and I were also a team in doubles, and I think it showed.”
Signa Kraus: “It is, of course, mega bitter. There were a lot of close games in the third set and everything could have ended differently. But we cannot blame ourselves. We gave all our strength, did everything we could and had a good match.”
