Details: The action took place on the 35th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, when Czechoslovakia ended communist rule and split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The protest united the opposition, in particular the liberal “Progressive Slovakia”, the pro-business “Freedom and Solidarity”, as well as the conservative Christian Democrats.
The participants of the action said that Fico is a threat to democracy.
“The government is taking away our freedom and democracy,” said a poster in the crowd.
“Slovakia was and will be a part of Western civilization. We don’t want anyone to move us towards Moscow,” said František Mikloško, who was one of the leaders of Slovakia in 1989, to those present on the square.
The leader of “Freedom and Solidarity” Branislav Gröling said that Fico is leading the country “to an authoritarian regime, as in Russia and communist China.”
Michal Šimečka, head of Progressive Slovakia, which is currently the most popular party in the country, said that the opposition will do everything possible to protect freedom and democracy.
“Slovakia is and will be a country of free people. And free people will not be silent,” he said.
It will be recalled that in the summer in Slovakia, many thousands of protest actions took place against the heads of the Ministries of Culture and Justice, whom the opposition accuses of personnel purges.
Against the background of protests, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Slovakia ordered to strengthen the protection of “constitutional employees” of the state.
