President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan Takeshi Iwaya – he announced this in his address on November 16.

He drew attention to the fact that the visit to Ukraine was Iwai’s first working trip after the appointment of the new Japanese government.

Zelensky thanked Japan for its support, noting that since the start of the full-scale war, Tokyo has provided Ukraine with a total of $12 billion in aid.

“We also discussed the fact that now North Korea has become an accomplice of Russia and is helping Putin in this criminal war. I informed about the activity of the North Korean military in Kurshchyna, about all threats from cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow. Russia is teaching North Korea modern warfare, and this could cause much wider destabilization. Together with all our other partners, we must counteract this,” he said.

Zelenskyi also announced a new support package from Japan, but did not provide details.

“Of course, we talked with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan about strengthening sanctions against Russia, about our economic cooperation with Japan, about reconstruction and how to bring a just peace closer. We are also preparing for a conversation with the new Prime Minister of Japan,” the president added.

Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya arrived in Kyiv on November 16 with an unannounced visit. He also met with the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiga.
