Yesterday, on the eve of International Student Day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi met with representatives of student self-government bodies of more than 200 higher education institutions of Ukraine.
The head of state congratulated the students on the holiday and emphasized that the youth are the future of our country.
Separately, Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the students who are defending Ukraine at the front, for their stability, strength and patriotism.
“For us, the unity of all youth, no matter where a student is today, is very important. This is an integral part of the strength of our state. Being a student during the war is difficult, difficult times, but very important for you and for the whole country,” the President said.
Volodymyr Zelenskyi also talked about his student years, in particular about a trip with friends to Crimea, and about the importance of people who share your values.
“If your value is freedom, then you will feel that your rights are violated and you will fight. But not alone, but together with someone who is close to you. The most important foundation is valuable people,” said the President.
During the conversation with the students, they discussed the involvement of young people in work in state institutions, in particular in ministries. The President emphasized that the state, business and the public should join forces so that young people go into public service.
“Students and youth should be in (state) institutions. Young people have more energy. And to go this way, to work for the state, to help Ukraine – it takes a lot of strength and energy,” the Head of State said.
Another topic of discussion is the mandatory creation of military departments in higher education institutions of Ukraine after the war. The President supports this initiative.
“Preparatory military education, educational work, training, various processes are necessary. Patriotic education at school should be at a high level. All this is very necessary. Because then you are ready. This does not mean that you are preparing for war, for the Third World War. But if we are attacked, you will be ready for this challenge,” Volodymyr Zelenskyi said.
Also during the meeting, the head of the Student Expert Council of Higher Education Institutions, Ilya Belyak, presented innovative projects and legislative initiatives that should increase the role of the Ukrainian student movement. In particular, the team of the Expert Council proposes to create the National Council of Students of Higher Education Institutions and introduce the position of the government commissioner for the rights of higher education students.
In addition, he presented the UA project – Ukrainians Abroad, which provides for the creation of a network of youth councils in the countries of the world, as well as a draft law on expanding the rights of student self-government.
