It is worth noting right away – UFC is running with John Jones. No other fighter in the promotion, with the possible exception of Conor McGregor, has received as much credit from the organization as John.
Jones gets almost everything he wants. He may, for example, not fight from 2020 to 2023, and then immediately return with a heavyweight title fight. Well, it’s John.
Dana White lost to Francis Nganna, who had to be matched with Jones because he just wanted to do some boxing matches. And this despite the fact that Francis gave the promotion knockouts, bright performances, and in general was a champion for a long time.
Jones became the champion with confidence – he crushed Cyril Gana. Did Ghana have a chance? And were they better than Francis Ngannou’s chances in such a match? It is absolutely safe to say that the answer to both questions is “No”.
And then John rested again, trained a little, got injured a little. Then he recovered and still did not go to the match against Miocic. Which, by the way, he also invented.
Stipe has not fought since 2021. Then he flew away with a knockout in a fight against the same Ngannou and did not really plan to return. The man was over forty, his light was turned off in the last battle. Health is not the same.
And here the fight against Jones immediately for the title. A match in which authorities weigh more than athletes. Once upon a time, the first was a top semi-azhvagovok. Once upon a time, the second was a perfect heavyweight. But years have passed since then. Jones somehow passed the last opponents, not really wanting to fight. Miocic has only been resting lately. What is this fight for?
John says it’s for the legacy. He says that this is exactly the opponent, the victory over which will definitely go into his legendary record. Maybe so, but unlikely now. A few years ago – definitely. But now we don’t have to talk about that.
At the same time, Tom Aspinall is sitting next to John. The British, who wins only early, has larger dimensions, strength and ability to fight. A young temporary champion who has come to claim your legacy. But Jones says that Tom miscommunicated with him and that’s why he won’t get a title fight. Unlike Miocic. Or in contrast to Alex Pereira – who has never fought in the heavyweight division in his life and has no special wrestling skills.
The most interesting thing is that the UFC reacted normally to this for a long time. It’s like if a champion doesn’t want to fight a top contender, there’s no problem. But the main fan of Jon Jones, Dana White, was still squeezed. At the final press conference, he stated directly that the winner of the pair Jones – Miocic will be obliged to fight against Aspinall.
John has a way out. Knock out Miocic or win by decision and retire. Since he is not interested in Aspinall’s fans, and Tom himself is not worth attention. How much would it affect the champion’s legacy in such a case?
Who is the favorite?

Stipe may have an advantage in one case – if he rested and recovered properly. Fighters of this level can always show class, even at 42 years old.
Miocic is dangerous everywhere. He knocks people out, fights with them. He kills them with a series of blows. John called Stipe the best heavyweight in the history of the promotion for a reason. This is a really high-class boxer.
But we don’t know his condition. We don’t know how the training camp went and whether Stipe’s body is ready for a five-round fight after a three-year break. Especially against an elite fighter like him. Who knows how to both fight and fight.
In this respect, the confrontation is interesting. Who will get who, who will hit whom. Who and what can show in the cage. It’s interesting, but not as much as it could be. And not as much as Jon Jones is trying to sell it.
The American toyed with the heritage and forgot that it is won not only in battles with those who were once cool.
