The publication notes that adviser Boris Epshtein, who coordinated legal defense in Trump’s criminal cases, himself offered the president-elect to become a special envoy on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
Epstein, who was born in Russia and lived there as a child, has no experience in foreign policy. He told the group that he had relatives on both sides of the conflict.
According to people briefed on the matter, several people on the plane (on which Trump was flying to meet with Biden at the White House – ed.) appeared to be shocked by the idea of appointing Epstein to a sensitive diplomatic post. In addition to his lack of diplomatic experience, he is currently under indictment in Arizona along with several other Trump allies for their efforts to overturn the 2020 election with so-called voter fraud.
According to the media, Trump listened with clear interest and did not reject the proposal, although he did not undertake any obligations regarding it.
“Whatever comes of Epstein’s idea, Trump has already invested his adviser with extraordinary power and has shown a willingness to listen to his advice more than anyone else’s. Even the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, who attended a series of transition meetings last week, privately noted , how surprised he is that Epstein was given so much power,” the newspaper writes.
The media outlet also notes that Epstein declined to comment, and a Trump representative did not respond to an email seeking comment.
