Two senior Democratic senators have called on the Pentagon and law enforcement agencies to investigate reports that billionaire Elon Musk has had repeated conversations with Russian officials, including dictator Vladimir Putin.
This is stated in the letter of the senators, which was obtained by the Reuters agency.
Musk, who was appointed to the top government post by Republican President-elect Donald Trump, oversees billions in contracts for the Pentagon and the intelligence community as CEO of aerospace company SpaceX.
In early September, Trump announced that if he wins the election, he will create a commission to improve government efficiency, which will be headed by Elon Musk. He later confirmed that he had discussed it with Trump and was interested in cooperation.
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Jack Reid have asked U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Pentagon’s inspector general to investigate Musk’s involvement in SpaceX programs after reports of his conversations with Russian officials in October.
They offered to check the possibility of removing Musk from these programs, which could lead to exclusion from contracts and privileges, the agency writes.
“This relationship between a prominent US adversary and Mr. Musk, who receives billions of dollars from the US government, raises serious questions about Mr. Musk’s credibility as a government contractor and permit holder,” the lawmakers said in a joint letter.
On October 24, the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal published a large investigation that Elon Musk, the richest man in the world and a businessman who has access to a certain part of classified information in the United States, maintains regular contacts with Vladimir Putin.

The article states that Putin, in particular, “asked the billionaire to avoid activating his Starlink satellite internet service in Taiwan” as a favor to Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
The WSJ also emphasized that Musk’s contacts with Putin are provocative “concerns about potential national security risks among members of President Joe Biden’s current administration, given Putin’s role as one of America’s chief adversaries.”
