Ukraine may open the Lviv airport next year, despite the declared martial law. This was stated by the senior partner of Marsh McLennan Crispin Ellison, writes Reuters.
It is noted that the national air carrier of Ukraine and several other companies went bankrupt due to the suspension of air services.
At the same time, Ukraine has been participating in negotiations with European airlines and airlines for the resumption of some air transportation for almost a year, Crispin Ellison, senior partner of Marsh McLennan, the world’s largest risk management consulting company, told Reuters.
“If regulators agree it’s safe to reopen, and the policy decision is made, the insurance industry is ready to support recovery efforts,” Ellison said, referring to 2025.
The State Aviation Service of Ukraine, in a written comment on the subject, told Reuters that it is considering the possibility of a phased and limited opening of airspace for civil aviation “provided that risks are assessed and reduced to an acceptable level, as well as the implementation of additional security measures.” She did not specify any time frame.
“Airspace security is a top priority and a lot of work has been done around that challenge,” Ellison said, without providing further details.
Reuters writes that the Lviv region, which borders Poland, rarely comes under Russian strikes compared to other parts of Ukraine, although Russian forces occasionally attack its energy infrastructure with drones and missiles.
It is noted that this airport has two terminals and before the war could serve up to 3 thousand passengers per hour.
According to Ellison, Marsh McLennan is supporting the Ukrainian government in creating an insurance mechanism to cover commercial aviation. The broker already has an insurance program for vessels carrying all cargo through the Ukrainian Black Sea Corridor.
He added that the aviation sector also participates in these negotiations.
“National carriers, low cost airlines and Ukrainian airlines are expressing interest and are thinking whether they should do it,” he noted.
The Ukrainian government is also keen to reopen the country’s main airport near Kyiv, but Ellison believes the aviation market is waiting “until there is confidence that it can happen in a much lower risk scenario.”
Earlier, Marsh McLennan insurance company stated that flights from Ukraine may not be opened before January 2025, Lviv may be the first. At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy insists on Boryspil.
