On December 18, Sotheby’s auction house will sell the oldest stone tablet with biblical commandments, which is approximately 1,500 years old.
This was reported on the website of the auction house.
Sotheby’s plans to get $1-2 million for the lot.
It is noted that the stone tablets belong to the late Byzantine period, weigh more than 50 kilograms, and are about 60 centimeters tall. The commandments are written in Paleo-Hebrew script on marble.
The plaque was found in 1913 during the construction of a railway on the coast of Israel. Due to the fact that the experts did not understand the value of the stone table at first, it became a cobblestone at the entrance to a local house with a road sign.
However, 30 years later, it was acquired by a scientist who researched the commandments and discovered their significance for archeology and history. The text on the table is written in 20 lines that repeat biblical verses.
“This remarkable tablet is not only an extremely important historical artifact, but also a tangible link to the beliefs that helped shape Western civilization. To encounter this shared piece of cultural heritage is to travel through the millennia and connect with the cultures and faiths that inform one of humanity’s oldest and most enduring moral codes,” said Richard Austin, Head of Books and Manuscripts at Sotheby’s.
