The Ministry of Health (MOH) issued such a warning on World Diabetes Day.

The Ministry of Health noted that this disease damages the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves. “People with diabetes have a 2-3 times higher risk of heart attack and stroke,” experts noted.

In addition, due to reduced blood flow and damage to nerve endings, the risk of leg ulcers increases, which can lead to amputation. And diabetic retinopathy – damage to the retina – causes 1% of cases of blindness. Also, diabetes is the main cause of kidney failure.

According to the Ministry of Health, to date, more than 1.2 million people in Ukraine live with the diagnosis of “diabetes”.

Although it is impossible to prevent type I diabetes, the risk of developing type II diabetes can be reduced by following healthy habits.

The Ministry of Health reminded of effective rules, compliance with which will help preserve health. Among them: regular exercise, which helps control weight, lowers blood sugar and increases insulin sensitivity; balanced nutrition – choose more fiber, whole grain products, vegetables, fruits and nuts; weight control – overweight and obesity significantly increase the risk of diabetes; quitting smoking and limiting alcohol – these steps will help preserve health in the long term; timely communication with the doctor. Deterioration of well-being or the appearance of alarming symptoms is a reason to promptly consult a family doctor.

Other diabetes newsA diet for diabetes is often perceived as a sentence – people think that from the moment of receiving such a diagnosis, they will never be able to eat sweets again in their life. In fact, this is not so – even if you are diagnosed with type 2 or type 1 diabetes, the diet can and should be varied and healthy.
