The CEO of Kyivstar’s parent company, Veon, called for an end to the war, pointing to the growing human cost of Russia’s invasion.
This is reported by the Bloomberg agency.
Ukrainians are “fighting hard” and deserve a “dignified solution”, said the CEO of Veon Ltd. Kaan Terzioglu in an interview with Bloomberg News on Thursday.
“Every plane that has taken to the sky must land at some point. Every war must end,” he said, answering questions about the consequences of Donald Trump’s victory for Ukraine.
The Russian war seriously affected critical services such as telecommunications. Veon’s Ukrainian subsidiary, Kyivstar, suffered cyberattacks that affected millions of users.
Some of the company’s employees died and others were forced to leave their homes due to the war, which has been going on for almost 1,000 days. Now Trump’s victory has increased the chances of ending this war, even if it will be on terms unfavorable to Kyiv, the agency writes.
The Russian invasion forced Veon to leave his country of origin. Founded in 1992 as VimpelCom, the company was one of the first mobile operators in Russia. It currently operates in six countries, including Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Veon, which is also listed on Nasdaq, is currently in the process of delisting its shares from Euronext Amsterdam. Last year, the company appointed former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as an independent non-executive director on Kyivstar’s board, underscoring its commitment to Ukraine. Trump has not yet appointed Pompeo to any role in his new administration.
Kyivstar has promised to invest $1 billion over five years until 2027 to restore Ukraine’s digital infrastructure. The funds are expected to be used for network and digital services, including potential acquisitions or development of new assets, as Veon announced in June.
