The court may in the near future choose a preventive measure for People’s Deputy Yevhen Shevchenko, who is suspected of treason. Tetyana Sapyan, communications advisor of the State Bureau of Investigation, stated this on the air of the telethon on November 14.

She clarified that the deputy is currently detained.

“In the next few hours, I hope, a preventive measure will be chosen for him. The prosecution will ask for his detention, because the crime is quite serious – it is Article 111 of the Criminal Code (treason),” Sapyan said on the air of the national telethon.

She noted that the reason for the “fruitful work” of law enforcement agencies was the conduct of a comprehensive psychological, linguistic and military examination, which confirmed that the elected official had begun to harm Ukraine’s defense capabilities and information security even before the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation.

On November 14, the State Bureau of Investigation announced that the incumbent People’s Deputy of Ukraine had been charged with treason. The bureau did not mention the deputy’s last name, but it is clear from the context, and the media also report that it is about Yevhen Shevchenko.

So far, he has not publicly commented on the serving of the suspicion on him.

Before that, Shevchenko wrote about the need to start negotiations with Russia.

“It’s time, Comrade President, to start a dialogue. I understand that you will have to leave after this. But the country is more important than personal ambitions. I will help if anything. I will go to Minsk again. We will solve everything. You just start,” the deputy wrote in his Telegram channel on November 7.

On November 8, the head of the President’s Office, Andriy Yermak, commented on the statements of the unnamed parliamentarians.

“Some people’s deputies seem to be confused in matters of national security, national interests and the future of the country. If in their minds national interests = the defeat of Ukraine, then they are making a big mistake in the interests of the Russian Federation,” Yermak wrote in his Telegram channel.

People’s deputy Yevgeny Shevchenko later called on Yermak “not to eliminate or harass people’s deputies” and stated that his position is allegedly no different from the position of US President-elect Donald Trump.

In May 2021, people’s deputies from the “Servant of the People” faction in the Verkhovna Rada supported the expulsion of Yevgeny Shevchenko from the faction by a majority of votes. This happened after he met with Alexander Lukashenko in April of the same year. The faction then declared that he was not delegated to conduct any negotiations in Belarus.

According to the SBI, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, the bureau has investigated 2,399 criminal proceedings regarding crimes against the national security of our state, including 1,746 for treason (Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
