The European Parliament on Thursday, November 14, adopted a resolution demanding more targeted EU sanctions against Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” that allows it to sell oil to bypass Western price restrictions.

Details: In the resolution, MEPs call for restrictions against all vessels of Russia’s “shadow fleet”, as well as their owners, operators, managers, related accounts, banks and insurance companies.
They also demand the systematic application of sanctions to vessels sailing in EU waters without insurance, and propose the use of drones and satellites to track such vessels.
Among other measures contained in the resolution of the European Parliament are the confiscation of illegal cargo of “shadow fleet” vessels and the cessation of the import of Russian fossil fuels to the European Union.
Back in late 2022, the EU, together with the Group of Seven, banned all seaborne imports of Russian oil and imposed a cap on international oil trade for Moscow at $60 per barrel along with its G7 allies.
But according to a study by the Center for Energy and Clean Air Research, about 80% of Russian offshore oil is now transported by the “shadow fleet” – vessels that the West cannot track.
Another concern is that outdated tankers that are part of Russia’s “shadow fleet” often leak and can cause an environmental disaster near the European Union.
According to the media, the next package of European Union sanctions against Russia will be aimed specifically at the “shadow fleet”.
