Scientists have discovered an amazing interstellar tunnel that starts around the solar system and goes to the constellation Centauri

The interstellar pathway likely connects to another nearby bubble of gas that was formed by the explosion of young stars, emits X-rays, and extends about a thousand light-years around the Solar System. Scientists from Germany, observing through the High Power Telescope Local Hot Bubble or LHB – the superbubble and the region of space in which our solar system is located – unexpectedly discovered something completely unexpected: an interstellar tunnel.

“This region of space is characterized by hot, very low-density gas with a temperature of one million degrees Kelvin and a density of less than 0.01 particles per cm3,” explains Michael Yeung, a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE).

The Centauri Tunnel, researchers believe, is part of a larger network of tunnels formed by stellar winds, supernova explosions, and jets from protostars.

“The current view is that it is related to recent supernova explosions that expanded the LHB,” Yeung said.
