The Slovak company SPP signed a short-term pilot contract for the purchase of natural gas from Azerbaijan and will consider the possibility of concluding a long-term agreement, the company’s press service reported.

This is happening against the background of the termination of the agreement between Moscow and Kyiv on the export of Russian gas through Ukraine to Europe, which forces SPP and other companies in the European Union to look for alternative sources, including Azerbaijan.

SPP said it has diversified gas purchase contracts with a number of companies – these contracts are flexible both in terms of volume and timing. It is noted that thanks to these agreements, the company has at its disposal up to 150% of the volume of consumer consumption, that is, it has a 50% volume reserve.

“SPP advocates the continuation of gas transportation through the territory of Ukraine for a long time, because it is the most economically beneficial solution. But due to the high risk of disruption of gas supply through the eastern pipeline, we are taking measures to guarantee a safe supply of gas to our customers, from large industrial consumers to households, in any situation,” said SPP CEO Wojtech Ferenc.

SPP adds that Slovakia also has diversified transit routes for supplies in case of a stoppage of the pipeline passing through the territory of Ukraine. This includes a pipeline from Germany passing through the Czech Republic.

The contract for the gas transit of Ukraine and Russia ends very soon – from January 1, 2025. Ukraine has said that it is not going to renew the contract, but Russia indicates that it is ready to continue if European consumers come to an agreement with Kyiv.
