Three dozen Russian airlines, which provide more than a quarter (26%) of passenger transportation within the country, may go bankrupt in 2025
About this are reported “Izvestia”.
A sharp deterioration in the financial situation and the revocation of the operators’ certificates threaten the bankruptcy of air carriers due to the accumulated debts for the leasing of foreign aircraft.
It is reported that after the introduction of sanctions in 2022, many of them stopped transferring leasing payments. In 2025, the government allowed them to write off their debts, but these amounts will be subject to a 25% income tax. Such a financial burden may force them to close.
Only large airlines – Aeroflot, Ural Airlines and S7 Airlines – were able to buy back leased aircraft with the funds of the National Welfare Fund. In the first quarter of 2024, the number of purchased aircraft reached 165 out of 400.
The report notes that the dissatisfaction of market participants is understandable, since the written-off payables belong to “unrealized income”, and the “saved” money is recognized as profit, and it is taxed.
