Details: On Monday, Omar Smir, Harry Kokay, Almaskhan Ardzinba, Ramaz Jopua and Aslan Gvaramiy were detained at the entrance to Sukhumi. They were returning from discussing the ratification of the investment agreement with Russia in Goodout. The authorities stated that the activists carried out illegal actions against the member of parliament Almas Aqaba.

The car, in which the oppositionists were, was stopped by security forces in masks. The passengers were pulled out and thrown to the ground, accompanying the process with insults. After that, they were taken to the State Security Service.

Such actions of the authorities caused protests and blocking of key bridges at the entrances to Sukhumi. After the liberation of the oppositionists, the Humistyn Bridge, through which the republican highway passes, was opened for traffic. Earlier, during the negotiations with the protesters, the member of the public chamber, Sokrat Jinjolia, said that the authorities are ready to release all the detained representatives of the opposition in exchange for the opening of the bridges.

For reference: Abkhazia, located in the northwestern part of Georgia on the Black Sea coast, fought a war of secession from Georgia in 1992-93. After the violent occupation of part of Georgia by Russian troops in 2008, the “independence” of self-proclaimed Abkhazia was recognized by Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru and Syria.
