Russian leader Vladimir Putin has ordered Kursk Oblast to be brought back under control by January 20, the day of the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump.

The Telegraph writes about it.

According to the publication, in order to regain control over the Kursk region, Putin sent 50,000 soldiers from Russia and North Korea. NATO suggests that the Russian president is seeking to regain lost territories before Trump’s inauguration.

British military intelligence estimates that in the coming days, Russia is likely to intensify attacks using kamikaze drones on Ukrainian positions, using new launch sites located close to the border.

About 12,000 North Korean conscripts are also likely to take part in the battles for the Kursk region as part of the military treaty between the Russian Federation and North Korea concluded this year.

Ukrainian analysts claim that the Kremlin can use a large-scale counteroffensive in the Kursk region to intensify attacks and advance towards the Sumy region.

So far, Russia has regained control of about half of the territory captured by the Ukrainian Armed Forces during the operation that began in August.

Western diplomats have expressed concern that Putin will try to complete the seizure of territory before Trump’s inauguration to strengthen Russia’s position in future peace talks.

The Telegraph also notes that since the start of the counteroffensive in the Kursk region, Russia has stepped up attacks on the front lines. In October, Russian forces captured more territory in Ukraine than in any other month since mid-2022.
