Greta Thunberg in Tbilisi protested against the UN Climate Conference, which began in Baku. This was reported by “Echo of the Caucasus”.
The 21-year-old Swedish eco-activist could not go to Azerbaijan, as the country closed its land borders in 2020 and Baku can only be reached by plane, which became a barrier for many climate activists due to the carbon impact of aviation. She also refused to visit Azerbaijan, like many other activists, because of the repressive political climate in the country.
The action in the Georgian capital was organized by the Caucasian Feminist Anti-War Movement, which demands “a future free from the stranglehold of authoritarianism, war and capitalist greed.” The participants of the action demanded from Baku, in particular, the release of political prisoners. They headed to the parliament building, where the rally of the Georgian opposition against the falsification of the parliamentary elections was starting. Greta Thunberg held a placard with the words “Democracy for Georgia”.
On November 10, Greta Thunberg announced her participation in the action in X. She wrote that Azerbaijan, using COP29 as a facade, is strengthening its control over power and exacerbating regional tensions.
– By turning a blind eye to repression in exchange for resources, Western states become complicit in the repression and suffering faced by the peoples of the Caucasus, – said the eco-activist.
Greta Thunberg also wrote a column for the Guardian in which she pointed out that the two previous countries of the annual UN climate summit – the UAE and Egypt – also continue to violate human rights.
– The entire economy of Azerbaijan is built on fossil fuels, and the export of oil and gas of the state oil company Socar accounts for about 90% of the country’s exports. Despite what it may claim, Azerbaijan has no ambitions to act on climate change, she said.
- On November 4, Greta Thunberg was first seen in Tbilisi at an opposition rally.
- On July 3, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine is negotiating the transit of gas from Azerbaijan.
