Most Americans believe that Donald Trump will push the US government into even greater debt obligations during his new term.

About this informs Reuters.

A two-day Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 62 percent of respondents, including 94 percent of Democrats and 34 percent of Republicans, believe Trump’s policies “will increase the U.S. national debt.”

Trump won the presidential election this week by promising tax cuts for businesses, workers and welfare recipients, as well as higher tariffs on imported goods and mass deportations of immigrants.

Republicans appear poised to win control of both houses of Congress, giving them broad powers to push a broad agenda that also includes spending cuts and energy deregulation for the first time since 2017.

It would also force them to face a policy dilemma that could undermine the party’s long-proclaimed goal of reducing the national debt by $35 trillion.

Trump’s tax cut proposals could add $7.5 trillion to the national debt over the next decade.

About 89% of Democratic respondents said they were concerned about the prospect of increasing the debt under Trump, compared with 19% of Republicans.

With all that said, the federal deficit widened to $1.833 trillion in fiscal year 2024 as interest on the debt topped $1 trillion for the first time.

We will remind:

The fortunes of the ten richest people in the world grew up by 63 billion dollars in one day after the victory of Donald Trump in the US presidential elections.
