German Essen better than other European cities combines festive mood and care for the environment.
Influential travel portal Europe’s Best Destinations has compiled a list of the greenest Christmas towns in Europe in 2024, which are most active in offering local products, using environmentally friendly electricity, recycled packaging, reusable cups, energy-saving Christmas garlands, Christmas trees from ecologically clean forests, as well as a deposit system for cups and mugs
The German city of Essen, whose Christmas markets use 100% green electricity, topped the rating. At the same time, all product suppliers have decided to abandon single-use plastic dishes this year, and there is also an absolute ban on plastic bags and a deposit system for reusable cups at the fair. (This scheme has been in effect for many years throughout Germany, when drinks are not served in disposable cups, but in cups – they are issued as a deposit, which is returned to the guest when the container is returned). In addition, the organizers of the Essen fair attach great importance to regional and organic products.
At the same time, Essen is also known for its large-scale light shows and installations that have been arranged for Christmas holidays throughout the city since the 1920s.
