The Prime Minister of Belgium denied Orban’s words about the change of opinion of Western leaders regarding the war in Ukraine

“There is still a consensus among the 27 EU member states that we will continue to support Ukraine and will do everything possible to support Ukraine””, — write: www.radiosvoboda.org

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo disagreed with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s observation that the number of countries supporting “peace” (ie an unconditional ceasefire) had increased since the US election. He told this to a RFE/RL correspondent on the sidelines of the EU leaders’ summit in Budapest.

“I didn’t notice that,” De Croo said.

He suggested that Orbán’s words referred to the European political community rather than the European Union.

“This is more than 27 EU countries. Between the 27 states, I see that Mr. Orbán’s opinion is generally different. And the rest of the 27 are still very united in the continued aid to Ukraine,” the Belgian Prime Minister explained.

De Croo insists that unity among the EU member states has been preserved: “There is still a consensus among the 27 EU member states that we will continue to support Ukraine and do everything possible to support Ukraine.”

The day before, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said at a press conference following the results of the summit of the European Political Community (to which 40 countries of the continent, except Russia and Belarus, were invited) that the victory of Donald Trump has changed the attitude of European leaders towards the war in Ukraine.

“The camp of supporters of peace is growing. And in the American elections, the camp of supporters of peace grew significantly. We are not talking about winning and losing. We are talking about a ceasefire. We are talking about human lives, we are talking about stopping the destruction. So those who have this point of view on the war – today they are in a greater majority in the Western world than before the American elections. This is a new situation to which Europe must react,” Orban said.

Donald Trump won the US presidential elections, the change of administration and transfer of power should take place on January 20.

After the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Trump made contradictory statements, on the one hand, claiming that if he were president, Russia would not have dared to attack Ukraine, on the other hand, criticizing the administration of Joe Biden and the Democrats for allocating funds to Ukraine.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that after being elected president, he will be able to stop the war in Ukraine “within 24 hours.” Both in Moscow and Kyiv, these words were commented on with skepticism. The Washington Post newspaper previously wrote about the details of Trump’s alleged peace plan: it is claimed that he wants to put pressure on both Moscow and Kyiv in order to force them to make peace at the price of Ukraine giving up part of its territories, and Russia giving up other of its demands. Trump has not officially confirmed that this is the plan.
