EU and China claim progress in talks to avoid tariffs on electric vehicles

The European Union and China have said they have made some progress on reducing or eliminating tariffs the EU applies to Chinese-made electric cars.

About this informs Bloomberg.

The EU executive described the results of this week’s talks as “technical progress,” and China’s Ministry of Commerce echoed that conclusion in a separate statement.

Both Brussels and Beijing have previously warned that significant differences remain over how to tackle the problem of subsidizing Chinese-made electric cars, which the EU says is unfair.

The EU and China are trying to reach an agreement on so-called price commitments, a complex mechanism for controlling the prices and volumes of exports used to avoid tariffs.

On Friday, the EU confirmed that individual agreements between carmakers and the EU are possible under World Trade Organization rules. But Beijing wants to conclude an umbrella agreement, which is one of the obstacles in the negotiations.

Several rounds of negotiations did not lead to a solution that would meet the EU’s strict requirements, including alignment with WTO rules and compensation for the full effect of tariffs. The 27-nation bloc also wants to ensure it can monitor compliance.

It is noted that the negotiations will continue at the technical level next week.

We will remind:

European Union and China Agreed in the near future, to conduct further negotiations on possible alternatives to tariffs for Chinese-made electric vehicles.

EU representatives voted for imposing tariffs of up to 45% on electric cars from China, which, if enacted, would increase trade tensions with Beijing.

BMW is afraid to lose the Chinese market, and therefore asks the government to oppose the introduction of tariffs on electric cars from China.
