Sam Altman’s company OpenAI purchased the Chat.com domain, registered in September 1996, paying with its own shares.
Chat.com now redirects to the OpenAI ChatGPT chatbot page. An OpenAI representative confirmed the acquisition of the domain in a comment to TechCrunch.
Last year, it was reported that HubSpot co-founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah had acquired Chat.com for $15.5 million. This domain sale deal is one of the two largest to be publicly reported.
Last March, Shah announced that he had sold Chat.com to an unnamed buyer. In a post on X, he confirmed that the buyer was OpenAI.
The company declined to say how much the URL cost. They also do not disclose the purpose of the agreement. It is interesting that OpenAI settled with its own shares.
