Ukraine faces a risky period until January 20, when there will be a transitional presidential administration in the US, due to the threat of a new attack by Putin. But the new president, either Trump or Harris, will work to end the war and grant Ukraine NATO membership.
This was stated by an American diplomat, the permanent representative of the United States in NATO, during the US Elections and the Future of Ukraine telecast (2008—2009), special representative of the US State Department for Ukraine (2017—2019) Kurt Volker, reported by a Radio NV correspondent.
“This is an important day for the United States, but it is also an important day for Ukraine. Today we wish all our friends in Ukraine all the best. We hope, and you must be sure, that the United States will be with you as long as it takes. And you will be the winners of this war with Russia,” he said.
He reminded that at the summit in Washington this summer there was an opportunity to bring Ukraine closer to NATO.
“Pokerface” is in negotiations. Ukraine expects that the US will be the first to offer an option to protect NATO in exchange for the temporary occupation of the territories — FAZ
“We didn’t do that. Germany and the United States slightly rejected this possibility. And that’s a shame. Because we could do it. I also think that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is mandatory. I don’t see any other possibility how we can restore peace and stability in Europe without Ukraine,” Kurt Volker emphasized.
He is sure that without granting Ukraine NATO membership, Putin will have a great temptation to attack again.

“If Ukraine is in NATO, we will be able to defeat Putin together. And this is what we have to do,” he urged.

He emphasized that serious risks await Ukraine during the so-called transition period between today’s US elections and January 20.
“This is a very risky period of time… Putin may look at this and take it as an excuse to attack further. And Trump, if he wins, then think that this is exactly what Biden did not do or wanted to do. But he is (Trump, — ed.) will be in opposition. Also people (Americans, — ed.) worry that if Ukraine joins NATO while the war is in an active phase, then we (the Americans, — ed.) will also have to directly enter the war with Russia. People don’t want that. That’s why everyone will be against such an opportunity… And that’s why it’s a risky step in the transition period,” emphasized Kurt Volker.
According to him, any new US president will bring Ukraine closer to NATO.
“But there will be a new president: either Trump or Harris, who will work to end the war. And they will try to make Ukraine a member of NATO. So that peace becomes permanent, so that peace remains in Europe forever,” Kurt Volker is confident.
On November 5, the decisive stage of voting in the presidential elections began in the USA. The preliminary results of the elections in the USA may be known as early as the morning of November 6, Kyiv time — around 6:00 a.m. Kyiv time, after polling stations in the western American states close.
The US Congress will officially approve the election results and announce the election of a new US president only on January 6, 2025. The inauguration of the newly elected 47th President of the United States and 50th Vice President will take place on January 20, 2025.
Ukraine’s invitation to NATO is the first point of President Volodymyr Zelenskyi’s victory plan, which he presented to European leaders in Brussels on October 17.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said at a meeting of NATO defense ministers that Ukraine will become the 33rd or 34th member of the Alliance in the future. At the same time, the president of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Jerry Connolly noted that Ukraine will be able to receive an invitation to NATO only after restoring sovereignty over its territories.
