The main goal of this day is to popularize veganism as an ethical and healthy way of life. International Vegan Day promotes awareness of the negative impact of the meat industry on the environment and animals, and highlights the positive impact of veganism on human health. Various activities such as free lectures, seminars, promotions, tastings of vegan dishes are held on this day to attract as many people as possible to the vegan culture.

What do vegans eat?

A vegan diet consists exclusively of plant products. Vegans use:

  • Vegetables and fruits: This is the basis of their diet, providing essential vitamins and minerals.
  • Whole grains: for example, oatmeal, buckwheat, quinoa, which are a source of complex carbohydrates.
  • Legumes: such as beans, peas, lentils, which are rich sources of protein.
  • Nuts and seeds: sources of healthy fats, protein and energy.
  • Plant-based dairy products: soy, almond, coconut milk, etc.
  • Meat substitutes: soy patties, tempeh, seitan and other products that imitate the texture and taste of meat.

What vegans are not allowed to eat

A vegan diet excludes all animal products. This means that vegans do not consume:

  • Meat: including beef, pork, chicken and other types of meat.
  • Fish and seafood: all fish, shellfish and other seafood.
  • Dairy products: milk, yogurts, cheeses and other products made from animal milk.
  • Eggs: All kinds of eggs, regardless of which bird they come from.
  • Honey: Vegans generally do not consume honey for ethical reasons.

Vegan and vegetarian: what are the differences

Vegans avoid all animal products, including meat, fish, dairy, eggs and honey. Vegetarians, on the other hand, do not consume meat, but may consume dairy products and eggs, depending on the type of vegetarianism (lacto-vegetables, lacto- or ovo-vegetarians). Thus, the main difference lies in the level of rejection of animal products.

Choosing a plant-based diet can have an impact on our health. Therefore, it is important that if you decide to follow a vegan diet, you should consult your doctor before doing so.
