Most NATO countries have a consensus on inviting Ukraine to the Alliance, while several countries have a reserved position. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this at a meeting with journalists on Tuesday, October 22, reports Interfax-Ukraine.

We see confidence in France today, support for France. We understand that the British will support us, and we believe that the Italians will support us,” Zelenskyi said.

He also noted that the issue of Ukraine’s invitation to NATO mostly depends on the USA.

We believe that they are consolidating their views on NATO, and this has an impact on, for example, Hungary and Slovakia,” the president added.

He expressed hope for a “more positive reaction” from the US after the presidential elections, because attention is currently focused on them.

Zelenskyi also spoke about Germany’s position regarding Ukraine’s invitation to NATO. According to the president, “we will have to work a lot with the German side.” At the same time, Zelensky added that the US will have an impact on it.”

Ukraine’s invitation to NATO — what is known

Ukraine’s invitation to NATO is the first point of Zelenskyi’s victory plan, which he presented to European leaders in Brussels on October 17.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said at a meeting of NATO defense ministers that Ukraine will become the 33rd or 34th member of the Alliance in the future. At the same time, Politico writes that the Alliance has not yet responded to President Volodymyr Zelenskyi’s call for an invitation.

US Ambassador to NATO Julian Smith said on October 16 that the Alliance does not plan to invite Ukraine to join in the near future.

In an interview with Reuters, Ukrainian Ambassador to NATO Nataliya Halibarenko said that Ukraine is asking for an invitation to NATO through diplomatic channels until Joe Biden leaves the post of US president.

On October 19, the French publication Le Monde, citing sources, reported that the US no longer objects to Ukraine joining NATO. This may also mean that Germany has also changed its position on this issue.

At the same time, the president of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Jerry Connolly, stated that Ukraine will be able to receive an invitation to NATO only after restoring sovereignty over its territories.
