In the conditions of an unstable situation with energy supply in Ukraine, many citizens faced possible blackouts of electricity, water and heat. To be prepared for such circumstances, it is important to prepare your home in advance and have a plan of action.

Blackout in Ukraine: how to prepare in advance

Power outages are one of the most common problems faced by Ukrainians. In order not to be left without basic means of comfort, it is necessary to prepare in advance:

  • Portable energy sources. Be sure to purchase power banks for charging mobile devices. Choose models with a large capacity, so that it is enough for several recharges. Also, consider purchasing small solar charging stations or batteries.
  • Light. For lighting, you should have battery-powered flashlights, LED lamps or candles. It is recommended to use battery lights that can be charged while electricity is available.
  • Stock of batteries. Keep a supply of different types of batteries for lights, clocks and other devices that may be needed in blackout conditions.
  • Energy-saving solutions. It is useful to install lamps on motion sensors or to purchase devices that consume a minimum amount of energy. This will help save battery charge during the period when there is no light.

What to do when the water is turned off

Water is a vital resource that is needed for cooking, hygiene and maintaining sanitation. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare your home for possible interruptions in water supply:

  • Drinking water supply. It is necessary to have a sufficient supply of drinking water at home, designed for several days for the whole family. Experts recommend storing at least 2-3 liters of water per person per day.
  • Capacity for technical water. If possible, store water in containers for technical needs, such as washing dishes, cleaning or flushing the toilet. For this, plastic canisters or even a bathtub filled with water before the expected shutdown are suitable.
  • Filters for water. To protect yourself from drinking poor-quality water, it is useful to have portable filters or water purification tablets at home.
  • How to prepare for heat blackouts

In the cold period of the year, the lack of heat can become a serious problem. However, there are several ways to keep your home warm even during blackouts:

  • Warm blankets and clothes. Prepare a few extra warm blankets in advance, as well as woolen socks, sweaters and other warm clothes. Multi-layered clothing will help retain heat better.
  • Heating means. Thermal blankets, thermal blankets and thermoses for hot drinks will help maintain a comfortable body temperature. It is also useful to purchase heating pads that can be filled with hot water for warming.
  • Heaters on alternative energy sources. If possible, consider gas or other portable heaters that run on fuel or batteries.
  • Warming the room. Check windows and doors for gaps that could allow heat to escape. Use window or door seals and thick curtains to reduce heat loss. You can consider temporarily placing people in the same room to heat it more efficiently.
