Military commentator Denys Popovych spoke on the air of Radio NV about the difficult situation around Pokrovsk, in particular in the Selidovoy area.
He noted that currently the Russian army is not advancing directly towards Pokrovsk, but it is concentrating its attention around Selidovoy, which is an important city for the defense of Pokrovsk.
“There, the tactical heights are tericons, from which you can control the outskirts of Pokrovsk with fire. The enemy is now trying to bypass Selidove in order to force our garrison to retreat from there, and thus capture this settlement. If the enemy succeeds in displacing our troops from there, then the attack will resume directly on Pokrovsk itself and on Mirnograd,” Popovych explained.
He added that the situation around Selidovoy is gradually deteriorating. The Russians are trying to act according to the same scenario as in Ugledar: in order not to attack the Terikons head-on, they expect that the Defense Forces will retreat under the threat of Selidovo’s encirclement, the expert concluded:
“They, in principle, are now taking it into their reach, but there is no encirclement yet. They will now try to create conditions for the environment.”
In addition, the situation is also difficult on the southern flank of the Pokrovsky ledge, Popovych said:
“And the events that are currently happening near Vugledar, and the events that are happening right now near Kurakhovo, they pose a threat to this settlement.”
On September 5, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi said that Ukrainian forces managed to stop the advance of the Russian occupiers in the Pokrov direction.
According to British intelligence, Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region remains the main target of the Russian invaders, who continue to capture new settlements.
On October 3, analysts of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that the Russians had captured new areas near Pokrovsk.
On October 4, the intelligence center of the Estonian Defense Forces suggested that by the end of the year, Ukrainian troops may be forced to leave Pokrovsk.
On the same day, Serhiy Dobryak, the head of the Pokrovskaya MBA, reported that the Russians were less than 7 km from the city, where 13,000 residents still remain.
