NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that China’s support for the war that Russia is waging against Ukraine negatively affects Beijing’s interests and reputation.

He said this on Thursday, October 17, during a joint press conference with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

China plays a crucial role in supporting Russia’s war against Ukraine, and such support cannot continue without harming its interests and reputation. Iran and North Korea provide Russia with missiles and drones in exchange for helping their military industries. We must objectively assess the situation and cooperate with our partners to solve common problems and protect our values,” said the NATO Secretary General.

Rutte emphasized that China is not an enemy of NATO, but challenge”. It supports Russia’s military efforts by circumventing sanctions and supplying dual-use goods that affect its standing in the world.

The Secretary General also emphasized that, together with Iran, China and North Korea contribute to Russia’s military efforts against Ukraine.

We have no evidence of North Korean soldiers participating in the war, but it is known that North Korea supports Russia with weapons and technology. This is an alarming situation that poses a problem not only for Ukraine, but also for all of us, including Russia itself,” Rütte concluded.

Russia’s cooperation with China is the main thing

In October 2023, the Pentagon stated that the Russian Federation purchased dual-use products and secondary military items for the Russian military in China, including small arms, spare parts, navigation equipment and protective equipment.

On April 7, 2024, the Bloomberg agency reported that China increased its support for Russia in the war against Ukraine, providing the aggressor country with satellite images for strikes on Ukrainian targets.

After the NATO summit in Washington in July, China was named in the final declaration a decisive factor” contributing to the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine. The Chinese delegation to the EU said that such claims were slander and also called on the alliance to stay away from Asia.

At the end of July, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, visited China for the first time since the beginning of the full-scale war. According to him, following the negotiations with his Chinese colleague Wang Yi in Guangzhou, he received a clear signal that China is not looking for “temporary solutions” to the issue of peace in Ukraine.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stated that China has confirmed that it will not supply weapons to Russia and that it supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
