General Christian Freuding, who is in charge of military aid to Ukraine at the German Ministry of Defense, named NV the three most important types of weapons for the Armed Forces, evaluated the Kursk operation and originally spoke about the permission to strike deep into the Russian Federation.

Today, Germany is the largest donor in support of Ukraine’s defense capabilities after the United States. And every year, the contribution of Berlin only grows.

In particular, according to the German government, in 2022 the country provided Ukraine with 1.6 billion euros in military aid, in 2023 — 5.6 billion euros, in 2024 — 7.1 billion euros, in particular, through the European Peace Facility fund . And as Chancellor Olaf Scholz recently assured, Germany will continue this business next year as well.

Scholz’s words were confirmed in an exclusive interview with NV by Major General Christian Freuding, who heads the special staff for Ukraine at the German Ministry of Defense. In addition, the general assessed the offensive operation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region, named the necessary weapons for Ukraine and predicted the possibility of waging war in 2025 between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. And he also avoided answering the question about permission for the Armed Forces to strike the Russian Federation with long-range Western weapons.

The interview took place at the end of September, and General Freuding gave his answers to NV’s questions in writing.

— How do you assess the Kursk operation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the point of view of political and strategic significance?

— Having carried out an offensive on Kurshchyna, the Ukrainian armed forces conducted a risky, but so far very successful operation. The offensive showed once again that war is not a linear interaction between warring parties, but courage, ingenuity and skill play a decisive role.
