The National Suicide Prevention Hotline has received almost 100,000 calls from Ukrainians in 5 years since its establishment.

This is reported by Lifeline Ukraine 7333.

“During its operation, our hotline received 99,610 calls and provided consultations to people in crisis situations. But every day we face new challenges due to the increase in the number of appeals in the conditions of war”, – said the founder of Lifeline Ukraine, Paul Nyland, during the presentation on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the hotline, which took place in Kyiv on October 14.

Before the full-scale invasion, the 7,333 hotline psychologists processed approximately 1,000 requests for support per month, and after February 24, 2024, the number of requests increased to 6,500, of which 4,000 (67%) were processed.

According to Nyland, the main challenge at the moment is the lack of funding to attract additional consultants, which does not allow processing all calls to the hotline.

He emphasized that training has also become an important direction of Lifeline Ukraine’s work over the past three years.

“The Lifeline Ukraine team does a lot of work. These are hundreds of consultations every month, hundreds of people attend our educational seminars and trainings every year. This is an important activity in a civilized country, because suicidal crisis situations occur regardless of the historical period, the level of economic development, and the state of peace or war,” stressed Anastasiya Glazkova, project manager of the Lifeline Ukraine Foundation, chief psychologist of the Lifeline Ukraine project.

Thus, in 2022 – 2023, Lifeline Ukraine held educational seminars for 17 organizations with a reach of more than 340 people, in 2023 – 2024, almost 200 specialists in the field of mental health underwent 6-hour trainings organized by Lifeline Ukraine in partnership with the International Medical Corps. In 2024, educational seminars were organized for 13 organizations, reaching more than 230 people.

According to Julia Okhmat, deputy coordinator for mental health and psychosocial support of the International Medical Corps, when specialists worked directly with educators and social workers and raised the topic of suicide prevention, they always heard the question: “are you sure we want to talk about it ?”

“Especially the teachers were very afraid to even say the word “suicide” out loud, because they thought that if we started talking about it, we would provoke something. That is, we saw the need to start not just talking about it, but also to teach people in supporting professions how to see signs of suicidal moods,” she said.

According to Okhmat, joint trainings of Lifeline Ukraine and the International Medical Corps were held for educators, social workers and psychologists of Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhya, Odesa, Mykolaiv and even Kherson regions.

“I am grateful to my fellow consultants – none of them came here just like that. All with faith in the usefulness of what we do and with love for people. I would like to thank our partners La Strada Ukraine NGO, “Krizenchat Ukraine”, Psychological Support Line for Men 2345, “Man in Trouble” hotline, Seth program, SafeWomenHUB online platform, Institute of Health Psychology, Center for Mental Health and Rehabilitation veterans of “Lisova Polyana” of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine” and other partner organizations, for sharing our values and the burden on crisis services for mental health support,” stressed Anastasia Glazkova, chief psychologist of the Lifeline Ukraine project.

Lifeline Ukraine is a national, professional line that provides psychological assistance to Ukrainians affected by the war and works on suicide prevention. Hotline 7333 works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
