NATO is not going to give in to Russian threats and will continue to provide strong support to Ukraine.

This was stated by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Reuters reports.

Our message (to the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin – ed.) is clear: we will act, we will do everything necessary to ensure that he does not achieve his goal and that Ukraine wins,” said Rutte.

The agency clarifies that the Secretary General spoke during a speech at the Clay Barracks, the American base where the headquarters of the new mission called NATO Assistance in Ensuring Security and Training Personnel for Ukraine is located (NSATU). This mission will gradually take over the coordination of Western military aid to Ukraine.

The move is seen as a defense of the bailout mechanism in case NATO critic Donald Trump returns to the White House. Diplomats admit, however, that handing over coordination to NATO will have limited impact, as the US is the Alliance’s leading power and provides a significant portion of Ukraine’s arms.

Addressing allied troops in temporary tents where NSATU will be housed, Rutte addressed servicemen from more than a dozen countries already involved in the mission. They will later move to a nearby hangar, where they will be joined by Ukrainian troops.

NSATU is expected to number around 700, including military personnel stationed at NATO headquarters in Belgium and logistics centers in Poland and Romania.

The base in Wiesbaden is also home to an American unit responsible for the long-range missiles that the US will temporarily deploy in Germany from 2026 to counter the threat of Russian missiles near Kaliningrad.

During his first visit to Germany as head of NATO, Rutte backed the move, which Russia called provocative and which sparked heated debate in Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party.

He also emphasized the importance for NATO to have a full set of tools to deter the Russian threat.

We are NATO. We are a defense alliance and do not seek to seize other people’s territories. As the strongest democratic alliance in history, uniting a billion people, we are ready to face any threats. Our opponents will never intimidate us,” Rutte added.
