Details: The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese organization for the victims of nuclear bombing, for its efforts to create a world free of nuclear weapons and for presenting evidence that nuclear weapons can never be used again.

Biden noted that it is necessary to continue moving forward until the day when we can finally and forever rid the world of nuclear weapons.

Therefore, according to him, the United States is ready for negotiations with Russia, China and North Korea “without preconditions” regarding the reduction of the nuclear threat.

“Neither our countries nor the world benefit from hindering progress in reducing nuclear arsenals. Reducing the nuclear threat is important not in spite of the dangers of the modern world, but precisely because of them.

These nuclear risks undermine the norms and agreements we have collectively worked on, and run counter to the vital work of today’s Nobel laureates,” the US president emphasized.

What preceded:

  • Amid discussions in the West about allowing Kiev to strike Russian targets with long-range Western weapons, Russian leader Vladimir Putin said in September that he would expand the conditions under which his country is ready to use nuclear weapons.
  • NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte urged not to listen to Russia’s nuclear threats and stressed that the Allies do not currently see direct risks of using nuclear weapons.
  • On Monday, October 14, NATO begins its annual Steadfast Noon nuclear exercise.
