Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, will attend the inauguration of the newly elected President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, on October 1. The press service of the Apparatus of the Verkhovna Rada reported on Stefanchuk’s visit on Monday, September 30.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian dictator Volodymyr Putin received invitations to this event.
It is noted that this trip to Mexico will be the first visit of the head of the Ukrainian parliament to the Latin American region during the independence of Ukraine.
The main purpose of the visit is to “deepen Ukrainian-Mexican interstate cooperation” and “strengthen interparliamentary dialogue.”
In addition, during the stay in Mexico, it is planned to work on strengthening international support, in particular, from the countries of the Global South, whose leaders will also attend Sheinbaum’s inauguration, the Apparatus added.
In August, Mexico invited the Russian dictator to Sheinbaum’s inauguration, which will take place on October 1, 2024.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Mexico called on the authorities to arrest Putin in the event of his visit to the country. They reminded that Putin is a war criminal who has an arrest warrant on suspicion of kidnapping and forcible transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia, issued by the International Criminal Court, the jurisdiction of which is recognized, in particular, by Mexico.
The European Commission made the same request. The EU also emphasized that Mexico has been a member state of the ICC since 2005.
However, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador rejected Ukraine’s request to arrest the Russian dictator.
On September 20, the director of the Latin American department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Alexander Shchetynin, said that Putin decided not to fly to Mexico, which is a member of the International Criminal Court, for the inauguration of the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum.
