We are talking about a reinforced concrete U-shaped structure that protects transformers from shrapnel damage and UAV strikes.
According to reports, nuclear engineers started designing the “second level” protection only after Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated at the UN that the energy equipment near the nuclear power plants does not have adequate protection and could become targets for attacks by the Russians.
We are talking about a reinforced concrete U-shaped structure. It is designed to protect large transformers from UAV strikes of the “Shaheed” type, as well as from shrapnel damage caused by indirect missiles. There are no specific data on the size of the building.
We note that the effectiveness of such measures has already been proven in the case of Ukrenergo substations. Earlier it became known that the energy company concluded contracts for 98 million and 120 million hryvnias for structures, each of which should protect one transformer.
Protection of Ukrainian nuclear power plants – what is knownRecently, the President of Ukraine, speaking at a meeting of the UN Security Council, stated that the Russian Federation intends to attack three Ukrainian nuclear power plants. According to the head of state, there is already evidence of these intentions.
In turn, experts emphasize that the infrastructure of Ukrainian nuclear power plants has very poor protection. According to nuclear energy expert Olga Kosharnaya, strategic objects are “protected” only by gabions with sand, which de facto do not protect even from debris.
