Budapest announced its intention to join the Sino-Brazilian initiative “Friends of Peace”

China and the countries of the Global South want to create a “Friends of Peace” platform to settle the “Ukrainian issue””, — write: www.radiosvoboda.org

Hungary will take part in the inaugural meeting of the “Friends of Peace” initiative in New York, which is led by China and Brazil. The spokesperson of the Hungarian government, Zoltan Kovacs, reported this on the X social network, quoting the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Sijarto.

According to him, the key message of the group is the urgent need to start peace talks to end the war in Ukraine.

Budapest supports these diplomatic efforts, aligned with the Sino-Brazilian peace plan, which emphasizes diplomacy as the only solution, preventing nuclear escalation and avoiding the division of the world into Eastern and Western blocs, the Hungarian government said.

Kyiv has not yet responded to this message.

China and the countries of the Global South want to create a “Friends of Peace” platform, which aims to “play a constructive role in the political settlement of the Ukrainian issue.”

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi in his speech at the UN General Assembly said that if anyone in the world is looking for alternatives to any of the points of the Ukrainian Peace Formula or tries to ignore any of them, it probably “means that they themselves want to do part of that , what Putin is doing.”

“And when the Chinese-Brazilian duo tries to grow into a chorus of voices – with someone in Europe, with someone in Africa, saying something alternative to full and fair peace, the question arises – what is the real interest? Everyone should understand that you will not increase your power at the expense of Ukraine. The world has already gone through colonial wars and conspiracies of great powers at the expense of smaller ones. Every country – including China, Brazil, countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East – all understand why this should be a thing of the past,” he said on September 25.

China says it is neutral in Russia’s war against Ukraine, but has been criticized for refusing to condemn Moscow over its full-scale invasion in February 2022 and for its ties to Russia.
