Russia has created a weapons program in China to develop and produce long-range attack drones for use in the war against Ukraine.
IEMZ “Kupol”, a subsidiary of the Russian state arms company “Almaz-Antey”, has developed and conducted flight tests of a new drone model called “Harpy-3” (G3) in China with the help of local specialists.
Kupol told the defense ministry it could produce drones, including the G3, on a large scale at a plant in China so the weapons could be used in a “special military operation” in Ukraine, a term Moscow uses to describe the war.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was unaware of such a project, adding that the country has strict controls on the export of drones.
Last week, US officials expressed concern about what they called China’s support for the Russian military machine.
The Harpiya-3 drone is capable of flying over 2,000 km. The payload is 50 kg, according to the Kupol report for the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. Samples of the “Harpy” and some other models of Chinese-made drones were delivered to Russia for further testing, again with the involvement of Chinese experts.
The company “Kupol” received seven military drones manufactured in China, including two “Harpies”, at its headquarters in the city of Izhevsk. The invoices, one of which requires payment in Chinese yuan, do not specify delivery dates for the drones or identify suppliers in China.
The delivery of Kupol drone samples was reportedly the first concrete evidence that Chinese-made drones had been delivered to Russia since the start of the Great War in Ukraine.
