The Russian authorities will spend at least 11 billion rubles (that’s more than $118 million) to protect airports from drone attacks. Anti-drone protection will appear in 31 major airports by 2028. We are talking about both federal and private facilities.

The Vedomosti newspaper reported on the amount and terms on Wednesday with reference to the updated version of the project “Development of infrastructure, ensuring security and formation of a specialized system of certification of unmanned aircraft systems”. The project was finalized following the instructions of Prime Minister Mykhailo Mishustin at the session on national projects on August 14.

Russia’s war with Ukraine, which has been going on for the third year, has become an unprecedented armed conflict in terms of the scale of the use of drones both on the battlefield and to strike targets behind the front line. Almost every day, the Russian authorities report on downed Ukrainian drones. They fly, including to Moscow and the region, for each such threat, the capital’s airports stop accepting and departing flights.

Cases of damage and destruction of ammunition warehouses and other military facilities on the territory of Russia as a result of UAV raids have also been recorded.

Russia actively uses Iranian Shahed drones for strikes against Ukraine, but lags behind in the production and implementation of its own UAVs.
