Between July and September 2024, Apple removed 60 VPN apps from the Russian App Store, when a total of 98 apps are no longer available for bypassing blocks.
Meduza and Roskomsvoboda write about this with reference to research by the GreatFire project, which analyzes the state of censored sites.
GreatFire found that Apple “quietly” removed 60 VPN apps from the Russian App Store between July and September 2024.
At the same time, the Russian censorship body Roskomnadzor announced on July 4 that it had requested to block only 25 applications. It is not known whether the department sent similar requests to Apple after that, the publication writes.
In total, 98 blocking bypass applications are unavailable in the Russian App Store, among them are the popular NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN and others. For the study, experts tested 360 applications.
The research was conducted using the App Store Monitor platform, which monitors the availability of applications in different countries.
