In New York, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi met with the heads of leading American energy, financial and insurance companies. USAID Administrator Samantha Power and United States Under Secretary of State for Management and Resources Richard Verma also took part in the meeting.
The head of state thanked the American business and the US administration for their support in restoring Ukrainian energy facilities.
“The issue of energy concerns not only today, but also the future. We have to prepare for the heating season, because this is our weakness today, because the power grid is under attack every day, really every day. This is not just rhetoric, these are real pragmatic attacks by Putin,” the President said.
Volodymyr Zelenskyi emphasized that a lot had been done to prepare for winter thanks to the support of partners. At the same time, the work carried out by the state, in particular for the decentralization of the energy system, is also important. However, Ukraine needs increased assistance, in particular for transformers.
“The biggest challenge is what to do when there is no electricity. In the summer it is one situation, and closer to winter it is a completely different one. After all, it is not only about electricity, but also about heating, communication, telephone – everything. This is your life,” added the Head of State.
Samantha Power pointed out that every winter Vladimir Putin tries to use the cold as a weapon to force people to leave the country.
“So this time he hopes that Mother Nature will be on his side, he hopes that the Ukrainian people and all of us will get tired of this struggle. And I think we’re here today to show that he’s wrong, that his bet is wrong, as it has been so far,” she said.
During the meeting, in particular, plans for preparing the Ukrainian energy system for winter and the possibility of implementing joint projects in the energy sector were discussed in detail.
