Spanish farmers demand to establish control over the import of grain from Ukraine.

The organization Unión de Uniones, which represents the interests of farmers in Spain, is demanding a solution to the increasing import of grain from Ukraine, which is growing.
On Wednesday, September 25, a rally will be held in the port of Santander in Spain with the demand to establish control over Ukrainian imports, which are collapsing grain prices in the country. On Monday, September 23, such a protest took place in front of the European Union building in Madrid.
It is reported that the Unión de Uniones is protesting the increase in grain imports, especially from Ukraine, and is calling on the European Commission to reduce them to avoid ruining farmers.
It is noted that the import of Ukrainian grain has increased so much that it amounted to almost 8.4 million tons in 2023 and almost 6.5 million tons in the first half of 2024.
“Spain receives more than half of the Ukrainian grain that goes to the EU, and what’s more, at increasingly lower prices,” Unión de Uniones pointed out as a determining factor in the drop in grain prices in the country, which amounted to 45% since May 2022 .
The Unión de Uniones also demands that the administrations examine markups on certain products made from grain raw materials: “It is unacceptable that while grains have become cheaper by 45% and electricity by 70%, animal feed has become cheaper by only 30 %, and bread became more expensive by 9%”.
It is noted that they are also calling for the introduction of assistance to compensate farmers and livestock farmers who find themselves in this situation.
