The Bulgarian minister said that the European Commission should ban the import of eggs from Ukraine to Bulgaria.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food of Bulgaria Giorgi Takhov made such a demand during the meeting of the EU Council on Agriculture and Fisheries, which was held on Monday in Brussels, writes “Evropeyska Pravda” with reference to the ministry’s announcement.

According to the minister, domestic production suffers greatly from the import of fresh eggs for consumption from Ukraine.

In the first six months of the current year 2024, it reached 2,618 tons, which is a five-fold increase year-on-year. The announced import prices are significantly lower than the prices of Bulgarian eggs, which puts serious pressure on prices in the domestic market, he added.

The minister justified the request by the fact that the protective measures taken so far at the EU level do not achieve the expected deterrent effect and are not a sufficient factor to ease the situation on the egg market in Bulgaria.

“Each country monitors the normal course of business processes in its country in order to protect the interests of its agricultural producers,” Takhov said.

He emphasized that the goal is to find an intersection where the rights of Bulgarian producers will be preserved.

“We are for firm support of the people of Ukraine, but in no case should it cost bankruptcies and violate the rights of our farmers,” he also stated.

Minister Takhov clarified that we are talking about fresh chicken eggs, which, in addition to great tension, also led to the bankruptcy of Bulgarian poultry farms.

“The members of the Council also considered the second year of the implementation of strategic plans within the framework of the Common Agrarian Policy,” Takhov said.

As a reminder, the EU has been in force since August 21 started the mechanism protective duties for Ukrainian honey, it will be in effect for all further imports of products until the beginning of June 2025.

In the spring, the EU created a safety mechanism to limit free trade with Ukraine.

In June, this mechanism was applied for the first time and extended to only one type of import – Ukrainian oatslater it was used in relation to eggs and sugar as well as honey.
