Bulgaria asked the European Commission to suspend the import of Ukrainian eggs in order to settle the situation on its market. About this UNN writes with reference to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of Bulgaria.

Details

During the meeting of the EU Council on Agriculture and Fisheries, which is being held today in Brussels, the Minister of Agriculture and Food of Bulgaria Giorgi Takhov appealed to the European Commission with a proposal to ban the import of eggs from Ukraine to Bulgaria. According to the minister, the import of eggs from Ukraine seriously affects the production in Bulgaria itself.

According to the Bulgarian Ministry, since the first half of 2024, the import of Ukrainian eggs to Bulgaria has reached 2,618 tons, which is a fivefold increase in annual terms. At the same time, import prices are significantly lower than prices for Bulgarian eggs, which puts serious pressure on domestic prices. The minister also justified the request by the fact that the protective measures taken so far at the EU level do not achieve the expected deterrent effect and are not sufficient to alleviate the situation on the Bulgarian egg market.

The minister emphasized that it is important to find a crossing point where the rights of Bulgarian producers will be preserved and to stop the import of eggs while the market is regulated in Bulgaria.

We stand for firm support of the people of Ukraine, but this should not cost bankruptcy and violation of the rights of our farmers

We will remind

Previously, Takhov explained that when the import of a certain type of product or commodity – vegetables, meat, eggs – reaches certain limits, which the EC outlined in advance, the country can activate the mechanism of banning their import.
