The sculpture is a man’s, it symbolizes a warrior, noted the acting director. Oleksandr Starik, director of the Dnipropetrovsk Yavornytskyi National Museum. According to him, this is evidenced by the helmet and other items of ammunition, as well as the hairstyle – three braids.
“This is the 12th sculpture from the territory of Donetsk region, which was transferred to us for temporary storage. This is a well-preserved sculpture, we can see its external features, we see that it is a Polovtsian warrior – we know about his hairstyle, the belt system on which the leggings were attached. Such statues are indeed a rarity. We are lucky – not only historians, but also all citizens, because these are monuments that must be preserved,” he said.
Baba already has damage from what is likely to be mortar fire from World War II, the military said.
In Dnipro, the statues from Donetsk region will be conserved and will be in temporary storage so that they can be returned to their homeland after the security situation changes.
The authorities of Donetsk region have repeatedly stated that there are no safe places left on the territory of the region, and therefore called for evacuation. At the beginning of September, due to the offensive of the Russian Federation forces and for security reasons, Ukrzaliznytsia canceled the departure of the evacuation train from Pokrovsk, now the starting point of its route is Pavlograd, Dnipropetrovsk region, located more than 100 kilometers from Pokrovsk. Evacuation by vehicles, in particular, buses, remains available.
